SSDs would need to be formatted prior to use with a host device. After the SSD is installed inside the enclosure and connected to your device, then you can follow these steps on how to format your new Solid-State Drive.
macOS
- Open Finder and navigate to your Applications Folder.
- Open Utilities and open the application, Disk Utility.
- On the Left Side and under External, Select the drive.
- On the Top of the Disk Utility application, click on Erase.
- If you click on Format, then a drop-down menu would appear, and you will be able to select how you would want the SSD to be formatted.
- You can selectAPFSfor use on Apple devices or exFat if you wish to use the SSD between Apple devices and Windows.
Windows 11/ Windows 10
- Open File Explorer and navigate to This PC.
- Under Devices and Drives, Right-Click onto the SSD.
- Click on Format…
- Here, you will be able to format the SSD either to NTFS (Windows Only)or to exFat.
