Satechi Product Compatibility with Apple Silicon Macs
Good News
Most Satechi hubs and docks work great with Apple Silicon Macs. The real difference is how many displays you can connect and which features require software.
Display Limitations on Apple Silicon
Apple Silicon Macs have built-in display limitations based on chip generation. Here's the breakdown:
- M1 Mac: Can natively support only one external display without extra software.
- M2 Mac: Same as M1. One external display natively supported.
- M3, M3 Pro, M3 Max: M3 supports one external display. M3 Pro and Max support two.
- M4, M4 Pro, M4 Max: Better support. M4 base model supports up to two external displays. Pro and Max support more.
Dual Display Setup with InstantView
If you want multiple displays on an M1, M2, or M3 MacBook Air, you need Satechi's InstantView software. This software trick allows your Mac to drive two external displays simultaneously through a single USB-C connection.
InstantView is included with most Satechi hubs and docks. Download it from support.satechi.com. Read our complete setup guide: "SiliconMotion InstantView: Complete Setup Guide for Mac and Windows."
Thunderbolt vs USB-C on Apple Silicon
Thunderbolt hubs and docks: Native support, highest performance, most bandwidth. Work immediately on all Apple Silicon Macs.
USB-C hubs and docks: Full support on all Apple Silicon Macs. If you need dual displays, InstantView may be required depending on your Mac model.
Choose Thunderbolt if you're connecting multiple 4K displays or need maximum data throughput. USB-C is more affordable and handles most everyday setups.
Power Delivery Support
All modern Satechi docks and hubs support USB-C Power Delivery. Your Mac will charge at full speed through the dock, whether it's a Thunderbolt or USB-C connection.
Clamshell Mode
Yes, you can close your MacBook and use external displays while it's plugged into a Satechi dock. The dock supplies power and display connections. Your Mac will wake when you press a key or click the mouse.
Checking Your Mac's Specs
Not sure which Apple Silicon you have? Click the Apple menu, select "About This Mac," and look for the Chip. It will show M1, M2, M3, M4, or one of the Pro/Max variants.
