This User Manual covers SSD installation, formatting, connectivity, and troubleshooting for the Satechi USB4 Slim NVMe SSD Enclosure (ST-EU4SNSS). The USB4 Slim NVMe SSD Enclosure supports M.2 NVMe SSDs and connects via USB4 for speeds up to 40Gbps — compatible with USB4, Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, and USB 3.2 Gen 2 hosts.
What's in the Box
- USB4 Slim NVMe SSD Enclosure (ST-EU4SNSS)
- USB4 connection cable
- Thermal tape
- Screwdriver
- Screws
- User Manual
SSD Installation
- Rotate the enclosure's bottom cover clockwise to unlock it, then lift the cover to access the M.2 slot.
- Before inserting the SSD, apply the included thermal tape to the SSD controller area as indicated in the diagram on the packaging.
- Align the M.2 NVMe SSD with the slot and insert it at a 30-degree angle, then press down gently and secure with the included screw.
- Replace the bottom cover and rotate counterclockwise to lock it.
The enclosure accepts M.2 NVMe SSDs (2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 form factors). SATA M.2 SSDs are not supported — NVMe only.
Connecting to Your Computer
- Connect the included USB4 cable between the SSD Enclosure and a USB4 or Thunderbolt port on your computer.
- The SSD will mount automatically on macOS if it is already formatted. On a new (unformatted) SSD, format it using Disk Utility (macOS) or Disk Management (Windows) before use.
Formatting a New SSD
- macOS: Open Disk Utility, select the SSD from the left sidebar, click Erase, choose APFS or Mac OS Extended, and click Erase.
- Windows: Open Disk Management, right-click the new disk, initialize it (MBR or GPT), then create a new Simple Volume with NTFS formatting.
Transfer Speeds
When connected to a USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 host, the USB4 Slim NVMe SSD Enclosure supports data transfer speeds up to 40Gbps — the full USB4 Gen 3×2 bandwidth. Actual speeds depend on the NVMe SSD installed and the host port capabilities.
Troubleshooting
- SSD not detected — Ensure the SSD is fully seated and the screw is tightened. Try a different USB4/Thunderbolt cable or port. A new SSD may need to be formatted before it appears in Finder or Explorer.
- Transfer speeds lower than expected — Confirm the host port is USB4 or Thunderbolt 3/4. USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports will cap transfer speed at 10Gbps. Use the included USB4 cable for best performance.
- SSD gets warm during use — Normal during heavy data transfer. Ensure the thermal tape is applied correctly. Do not cover the enclosure.
