This User Manual covers setup, features, compatibility, and specifications for the Satechi USB4 Slim NVMe SSD Enclosure (ST-EU4SNSS).
What's In The Box
USB4 Slim NVMe SSD Enclosure, USB4 Host Cable, screwdriver, screw, thermal pad, User Manual. (SSD not included.)
Product Overview
This slim, bus-powered enclosure turns a bare M.2 NVMe SSD into fast external storage: install a 2230, 2242, 2260, or 2280 drive up to 8TB, twist the cover shut, and transfer at up to 40Gbps over USB4. The 15 cm host cable tucks into a built-in compartment under the twist-off cover, so nothing dangles in your bag, and the tool-free cover design means the only screw involved is the one holding the SSD. It is plug and play, drawing power from the host with no external power source.
Setup
The enclosure is plug and play and bus powered: no drivers or external power required.
- Install your SSD: Open the Twist-off SSD Cover and fit a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD (see SSD Installation below).
- Connect to your host device: Plug the included USB4 Host Cable into a USB4, Thunderbolt 5, or Thunderbolt 4 port on your computer.
- Format your SSD: If using a brand new SSD, format the drive to support your host device's operating system: Disk Utility on Mac, Disk Management on Windows.
Unlocking and locking the Twist-off SSD Cover
Rotate the bottom cover toward the unlock mark to remove it, and back toward the lock mark to secure it, as shown on the cover's alignment indicators.
SSD Installation
1. Remove plastic from one side of the thermal pad. Align and apply sticky side to the enclosure.
2. Remove top plastic before installing SSD.
3. Insert an M.2 NVMe SSD at a 30° angle.
4. Use included screw and screwdriver to lock SSD into place.
Note: If using a brand new SSD, format the drive to support the host device operating system. Compatible with M.2 NVMe SSD drives.
Functions
Parts labeled diagram of the USB4 Slim NVMe SSD Enclosure with 9 labeled components, including the included accessories.
1. USB4 Host Port (40Gbps): The USB-C port that connects to your computer with the included cable. Carries data at up to 40Gbps on USB4, Thunderbolt 5, and Thunderbolt 4 hosts, and is backward compatible with slower USB-C ports at their own speeds.
2. LED Indicator: The small status light on the side of the enclosure that shows the drive is connected.
3. Screw: Secures the installed SSD in the slot.
4. Screwdriver: Included driver for the SSD screw.
5. Thermal Pad: Apply its sticky side to the enclosure before installing the SSD, and remove the top plastic film so it conducts heat away from the drive.
6. M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure (2230/2242/2260/2280) (up to 8TB max): The SSD slot. Takes M.2 NVMe drives in all four sizes up to 8TB; SATA M.2 drives and SSDs with pre-installed heatsinks do not fit.
7. Cable Compartment: The recess under the cover that stores the host cable when you are not using it, so the cable travels with the drive.
8. USB4 Host Cable (15cm): The included 15 cm USB-C to USB-C cable rated for 40Gbps.
9. Twist-off SSD Cover: The rotating bottom cover. Twist to the unlock mark to open the SSD slot and cable compartment; twist back to lock.
Features
- Data transfer up to 40Gbps over USB4, with read speeds up to 3840 MB/s and write speeds up to 3200 MB/s with a capable SSD.
- Fits M.2 NVMe SSDs in 2230, 2242, 2260, and 2280 sizes, up to 8TB.
- Built-in cable compartment stores the included 15 cm host cable.
- Tool-free twist-off cover for opening the enclosure; only the SSD itself is screwed in.
- Bus powered: no external power source needed.
- Plug and play on macOS and Windows; no drivers.
Important Limitations
No SATA SSDs: Not compatible with SATA SSDs. The enclosure takes M.2 NVMe drives only.
No heatsink SSDs: Not compatible with SSDs with heat-sinks. Remove any pre-installed heatsink or use a bare drive; the included thermal pad handles cooling.
Eject before unplugging: Properly eject the SSD prior to disconnecting the enclosure from the host device. Failure to do so can result in corrupted or lost files.
Disconnect before opening: Ensure the enclosure is not connected to power before removing or installing an SSD.
Cable matters: Please use the included USB4 cable for optimal performance. If a longer cable is needed, ensure it is USB4 or Thunderbolt 5/4 with 40Gbps bandwidth to avoid slower speeds.
