Most new SSDs need to be formatted before your computer can use them. After installing the M.2 SATA SSD, format it on a Mac like this:

1. Open Disk Utility.
2. Select the SSD from the list.
3. Click Erase.
4. Name the drive.
5. Choose APFS or Mac OS Extended as the format, then click Erase.

If you also plan to use the SSD on a Windows PC, format it as exFAT so both macOS and Windows can read it.
