This User Manual covers setup, features, SSD installation, and specifications for the Satechi Mini NVMe SSD Enclosure (ST-E2230M).
What's In The Box
Mini NVMe SSD Enclosure with attached USB-C lanyard cable, User Manual. SSD sold separately.
Functions
- USB-C Lanyard Cable
- USB-C Connector
- Silicone Pin
- Magnetic Tempered Glass Cover
- Active Cooling Fan
- Ventilation Slots
- Write Protection Switch
Product Overview
The Mini NVMe SSD Enclosure turns a single M.2 2230 NVMe SSD into pocketable portable storage. It connects to a host device through its attached USB-C lanyard cable at speeds up to 10Gbps, draws power over that same cable with no external supply needed, and uses an active cooling fan and ventilation slots to keep the drive from throttling during long transfers. A magnetic tempered glass cover gives tool-free access to the drive, and a write protection switch lets you set the drive to read-only.
Setup
The Mini NVMe SSD Enclosure is plug-and-play. No drivers are required.
- Install an SSD. Fit an M.2 2230 NVMe SSD, sold separately, following the SSD Installation steps below.
- Set the write protection switch. Choose read-only or read and write before connecting.
- Connect to your device. Plug the USB-C connector into your computer, tablet, or phone.
Parts and Features
The enclosure’s components are numbered below to match the diagram.
Labeled components of the Mini NVMe SSD Enclosure, including a detail view of the active cooling fan.
1. USB-C Lanyard Cable: Braided USB-C cable attached to the enclosure by a lanyard, so the cable travels with the drive. The cable can be detached from the lanyard at the plastic connector cover if you want to use a USB-C extension cable instead.
2. USB-C Connector: Connects the enclosure to a host device and carries both data and power. No external power supply is needed.
3. Silicone Pin: Holds the installed SSD in place. Pull it back to seat or release the drive.
4. Magnetic Tempered Glass Cover: Slides off magnetically for tool-free access to the SSD bay. The magnets do not affect the SSD or the data on it.
5. Active Cooling Fan: Draws heat away from the SSD during sustained transfers to reduce thermal throttling.
6. Ventilation Slots: Allow airflow across the drive alongside the cooling fan.
7. Write Protection Switch: Sets the drive to read-only or to read and write. See Write Protection Switch below.
SSD Installation
The SSD is sold separately and only the M.2 2230 size fits.
- Slide off the magnetic cover.
- Insert the SSD at a 45 degree angle, label side up.
- Pull back the silicone pin.
- Push down on the SSD, then release the pin to secure it.
- Align the grooves and slide the cover back on.
Steps 1 to 5 of installing an M.2 2230 NVMe SSD.
A new or unformatted SSD must be formatted before use. Format to ExFAT to use the drive on both Windows and Mac, or to APFS for Mac only.
Write Protection Switch
The switch on the side of the enclosure sets whether the installed SSD can be written to.
Switch right for read-only. Switch left for read and write.
Switch right: Write Protection Enable (read-only). The drive can be read but not written to or erased.
Switch left: Write Protection Disabled (read and write permission). The drive can be read from and written to normally.
Move the switch before connecting the enclosure. Changing it while the enclosure is connected requires disconnecting and reconnecting for the change to take effect.
Features
- Pocketable enclosure for a single M.2 2230 NVMe SSD, up to 8TB
- Transfer speeds up to 10Gbps
- Bus powered, no external power supply required
- Active cooling fan and ventilation slots to limit thermal throttling
- Tool-free magnetic tempered glass cover
- Hardware write protection switch
Important Limitations
Only compatible with M.2 2230 sized SSDs.
Only M-Key NVMe SSDs are supported. SATA M.2 drives are not compatible.
SSDs must be formatted to support the host device’s operating system.
Do not disconnect the SSD while in use. Eject it from the host device before unplugging.
Do not replace the SSD while the enclosure is connected to a host device.
Hot swapping is not supported. To change the write protection switch, disconnect the enclosure from the host device, move the switch, then reconnect.
The enclosure fits phone cases up to 2.5mm thick. For thicker cases, use a USB-C extension cable.
Installed SSDs will not reach the speeds quoted on the drive itself, because those figures come from the drive being connected directly inside a computer rather than over USB.
