This User Manual covers setup, SSD installation, formatting, and specifications for the Satechi USB4 NVMe SSD Pro Enclosure (ST-EU4NPM).
What's In The Box
USB4 NVMe SSD Pro Enclosure, USB-C cable, thermal pad, clear polycarbonate case, User Manual. SSD sold separately.
Product Overview
The USB4 NVMe SSD Pro Enclosure turns an M.2 NVMe SSD into portable storage running at up to 40Gbps over USB4. It is bus powered through the included USB-C cable, needs no drivers, and installs a drive tool-free using a silicone pin rather than screws. An aluminium body, an included thermal pad, and an optional clear polycarbonate case spread heat during sustained transfers, and a blue LED reports connection and transfer activity.
Setup
The enclosure is plug-and-play. No drivers are required.
- Install an SSD. Fit an M.2 NVMe SSD, sold separately, following the SSD Installation steps below.
- Format the drive if it is new. See Formatting Your SSD.
- Connect to a USB-C host device using the included USB-C cable.
For full 40Gbps performance, connect to a USB4 or Thunderbolt 3, 4, or 5 port and use the cable supplied with the enclosure.
SSD Installation
The SSD is sold separately. Installation is tool-free, with no screwdriver needed.
1. Slide the switch to the right to unlock the top door, then lift the cover off.
2. Remove the silicone pin and reposition it in the notch on the opposite side to match your drive length.
3. Insert the SSD at an angle, label side up, with the pins aligned to the slot, then lower it flat. The drive seats at roughly 30 degrees.
4. Apply the included thermal pad. Peel the film from both sides and press the sticky side onto the SSD.
5. Refit the top cover by aligning the side with the metal hooks first, then pressing the opposite side until it clicks.
6. Snap the clear polycarbonate case back on if you are using it.
B: insert the SSD at a 30 degree angle, label side up. C: the soft silicone plug retains the drive in place of a screw.
LED Indicator
The enclosure has a blue LED status light.
Steady blue: connected to a host device, no data being transferred.
Blinking blue: data is being transferred.
Formatting Your SSD
Most new SSDs must be formatted before the host device will show them.
exFAT works on both Windows and Mac, readable and writable on each. Use it if you move the drive between platforms.
NTFS works on Windows only and is not compatible with macOS.
On a Mac, format with Disk Utility. On Windows, use Disk Management or File Explorer.
Features
- Up to 40Gbps over USB4, downward compatible with older USB standards
- Supports M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen 4x4 SSDs up to 16TB
- Tool-free silicone pin installation, no screwdriver required
- Aluminium body with included thermal pad for heat dissipation
- Optional clear polycarbonate case for extra cooling and scratch protection
- Bus powered with no external supply, and no drivers to install
Important Limitations
Only M.2 NVMe SSDs are supported. M.2 SATA drives are not compatible.
Double-sided SSDs are not supported.
SSDs with pre-installed heat sinks are not supported. Use the included thermal pad instead.
Supported drive sizes are 2242, 2260, and 2280.
Hot swapping is not supported. Eject the drive from your operating system and fully disconnect the enclosure before changing the SSD.
Eject the drive from the host device before unplugging the USB-C cable. Failing to do so can result in corrupted or lost files.
A USB-C to USB-A adapter is not included and is sold separately. On a USB-A or older USB-C port, speed and functionality are reduced.
Installed SSDs will not reach the speeds printed on the drive itself, because those figures come from the drive connected directly in an internal M.2 slot rather than over USB.
On iPad, speeds are limited to 10Gbps. On iPhone, speeds are limited to 480Mbps.
