If your Satechi Slim W1 Wired Backlit Keyboard (ST-UCSW1M) is not responding after you plug it in, the port or the connection is usually the cause. The Slim W1 Wired Backlit Keyboard connects through its built-in USB-C cable and is detected automatically, with no drivers to install and no battery to charge. The LED indicator lights up as soon as the keyboard is connected, so that light is the quickest way to tell whether power is reaching it. Work through the steps below in order.
Steps to try
- Unplug the built-in USB-C cable and plug it back in, pushing the connector in until it is fully seated.
- Look at the LED indicator on the keyboard. It should light up the moment the Slim W1 Wired Backlit Keyboard is connected. No light means the port is not supplying power to the keyboard.
- Try a different USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 port on your computer.
- If your computer only has Type-A ports, connect the Slim W1 Wired Backlit Keyboard through a Type-A to Type-C adapter, since the keyboard uses a USB-C connection.
- Restart your computer with the keyboard connected. A disconnect and reconnect, or a restart, clears most temporary input problems.
- On a Mac, watch for the Keyboard Setup Assistant the first time you connect the Slim W1 Wired Backlit Keyboard. Follow the on-screen instructions so macOS can identify the keyboard before you start using it.
- If the keyboard types but the keys look dark, press F6 to raise the backlight. The Slim W1 Wired Backlit Keyboard has three backlight levels plus a fully off setting, and F5 steps the brightness down until the backlight turns off.
- Install any pending operating system updates, then reconnect the keyboard.
- Connect the Slim W1 Wired Backlit Keyboard to a different computer that has a USB-C port. If it works there, the original port or computer is the problem. If it does not respond on any computer, the keyboard itself is at fault.
