Product Overview

The USB-C Multimedia Adapter M1 expands a single USB-C port on your computer into two HDMI video outputs that can drive two displays at once, two USB-A 3.0 data ports, a USB-C data port, and a separate USB-C Power Delivery port for pass-through charging. HDMI video output runs through the SiliconMotion InstantView app, so install that before you connect your screens.

Setup

The USB-C Multimedia Adapter M1 needs the SiliconMotion InstantView app installed before either HDMI port will output video. Install the app first, then connect.

1. Download and install the InstantView app: Download and install the SiliconMotion InstantView app on your computer. Full steps are below.
2. Connect your screens: Plug the adapter's USB-C cable into the USB-C port on your computer, then connect your displays to the two HDMI ports. One HDMI port supports up to 4K at 30Hz, the other up to 4K at 60Hz.

How to install the App

1. Download the InstantView app from the SiliconMotion downloads page
2. Open the downloaded .dmg file and move to the Applications folder.
3. Close the window and eject the InstantView drive from Finder.
4. Connect the Satechi Multimedia M1 Adapter.
5. Once connected, open the InstantView app on your device.
6. Upon initial startup, InstantView will ask for permission to the following. Files and Folder, which gives access to files on removable drives and is needed for accessing the InstantView Support files on the M1 Adapter itself. Recording the screen, which is needed for activating HDMI2. Then click to restart the App to activate the setting.
7. When connecting to HDMI2, there will be an InstantView pop-up. To disable it, right-click on the App in the menu bar and select 'No Pop-up App at Plugin.'

Ports and Features

1. USB-C Cable: The attached USB-C cable that connects the adapter to your computer.
2. 2X USB-A 3.0 Ports: Two USB-A 3.0 ports for data transfer, up to 5 Gbps each. They do not support charging, and they are not compatible with CD readers, including the Apple USB SuperDrive.
3. 4K@30Hz HDMI Video Port: HDMI video output supporting up to 4K at 30Hz. The SiliconMotion InstantView app must be installed for this port to output video.
4. 4K@60Hz HDMI Video Port: HDMI video output supporting up to 4K at 60Hz. The SiliconMotion InstantView app must be installed for this port to output video.
5. USB-C Data Port: USB-C port for data transfer, up to 5 Gbps. It does not support video output or charging.
6. USB-C PD Port (up to 100W): USB-C Power Delivery port for pass-through charging only. It accepts up to a 100W power adapter and delivers up to 85W to your computer when used with a proper e-marked USB-C cable. It does not support data transfer or video output.
7. LED Indicator: Lights up when the adapter is connected and receiving power.

Important Limitations

SiliconMotion software must be installed for both HDMI ports to function. Install the InstantView app from SiliconMotion before you connect your displays. Without it, neither HDMI port will output video. Updated drivers can be downloaded from the SiliconMotion downloads page.

Screen recording permission is required to activate HDMI2. On first launch InstantView asks for permission to record the screen. That permission is what turns HDMI2 on, so grant it and then restart the app.

InstantView also needs Files and Folder access. That permission lets the app reach the InstantView Support files stored on the adapter itself.

An InstantView pop-up appears when you connect to HDMI2. To stop it, right-click the app in the menu bar and select 'No Pop-up App at Plugin.'

The USB-C PD port is labeled up to 100W but delivers up to 85W. The 100W figure is the size of power adapter the port accepts. Actual pass-through charging tops out at 85W, and you need a 100W power adapter plus a proper e-marked USB-C cable to reach it.

The USB-C PD port is power only. It does not support data transfer or video output.

The USB-C data port does not support video or charging. It is a data port only, up to 5 Gbps.

The USB-A ports do not support charging or CD readers. They are data only, and they are not compatible with the Apple USB SuperDrive or other CD drives.
