Find your symptom below and work through that section only. Each section is ordered from the most common cause to the least, so stop as soon as the problem clears.
Nothing works at all, on a dock with its own power adapter
- Plug the adapter straight into a wall outlet rather than a power strip, surge protector, or extension cord.
- Try a different wall outlet, ideally on another circuit, to rule out a dead outlet.
- Check the adapter, the power cable, and both connectors for physical damage, bent pins, or fraying.
- Make sure every connection is fully seated: adapter into the wall, cable into the adapter, cable into the dock.
- Use the original Satechi adapter that came with the product. An underpowered third party adapter may not turn it on.
- Unplug for 30 seconds and plug back in to reset it, then watch for the status light.
Nothing works at all, on a hub powered by the computer
- Check the USB-C or Thunderbolt cable and both connectors for damage or debris, then reseat firmly at both ends.
- Plug the hub directly into a port on your computer, not through another hub, dock, or extension cable.
- Try a different USB-C or Thunderbolt port. Not every port carries the same power or data, and some are charge only.
- Confirm your computer is powered on and awake. This hub draws all of its power from the computer, so it stays off if the computer is asleep.
- Test the hub on another computer to find out whether the fault is the hub or the port.
- If your model supports an optional power adapter, connect it. Displays and SSDs may need the extra power.
An external monitor is not working
- Connect the hub to a video capable USB-C or Thunderbolt port. Some laptop ports carry data only.
- Try a different video cable, and try a different input on the monitor.
- Select the matching input on the monitor itself, for example the correct HDMI input.
- On a Mac, open System Settings, then Displays, and choose Detect Displays.
- Check how many external displays your Mac chip supports natively. Base M-series chips drive fewer displays than Pro and Max chips.
Ethernet is not working
- Try a different ethernet cable, run straight from the hub to the router with nothing in between.
- Restart the router, then restart the computer.
- If macOS shows an Allow accessory to connect prompt, choose Allow.
- Open System Settings, then Network, and confirm the ethernet adapter is listed and enabled.
There is no audio
- Open System Settings, then Sound, and pick the output device that matches what you have connected.
- If you are using an HDMI display with speakers, select that display as the sound output.
- Reseat the audio connector at both ends and check it for debris.
- Test the same headphones or speakers directly on the computer to separate the hub from the audio device.
A drive, SD card, or USB device is not recognized
- Reseat the drive or card firmly, and try a different port on the hub.
- In Finder, open Settings, then Sidebar, and switch on External disks so the drive appears.
- Open Disk Utility and check whether the drive is listed but unmounted. If it is, choose Mount.
- Test the same drive plugged directly into the computer to separate the hub from the drive.
- If the hub supports an optional power adapter, connect it. Bus powered drives can draw more than the hub can supply on its own.
The product is a cable or a passive adapter
- This product has no battery and no power of its own, so there is nothing to turn on. The fault is usually the connection or a device on one end.
- Check both connectors for damage, bent pins, or debris, and reseat them firmly at both ends.
- Test it with a different device and a different port to see whether the problem follows the cable.
- Swap in another compatible cable to confirm whether the cable is the cause.
- Confirm both devices are powered on and set to the correct input or mode.
Still not working
Only after every step in the matching section above has been tried and the problem is unchanged should this be treated as a hardware fault. Do not skip ahead to this. At that point, have the model name and the result of each step tried, and a Satechi specialist can take it from there.
