MacBook:
There are multiple ways to safely eject an external device from your MacBook. Below is a list of the most common ways:
1. Right-Click on the drive and select "Eject 'Drive Name'"
2. Open the Finder window - On the left sidebar click the Eject icon to the right of the drive
3. Click and drag the connected drive to the Trash icon located on the Dock, the Trash icon will change to the Eject icon while doing so.
Windows 10:
Method 1:
1. Select the Satey Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon located in the system tray (if you do not see the icon you may need to select the arrow pointing upwards to show hidden icons)
2. After clicking the icon you will see a list of removable storage devices connected to your Windows devices - Click on the one you want to remove
3. Once selected you will see a notification informing you that it is Safe To Remove Hardware.
Method 2:
1. Open File Explorer
2. Select This PC
3. On the Devices and drives section you should see a list of drives
4. Right-click on the drive you want to remove and select Eject
5. Once selected you will see a notification informing you that it is Safe To Remove Hardware.
Method 3:
1. Open the Settings app (Windows key + l)
2. Select Devices
3. In the column on the left, go to Bluetooth & other devices
4. Scroll down to the Other devices section
5. Find the external hard drive or USB stick you want to remove, click or tap on its name, and then on Remove device
6. A confirmation dialog appears. In it, press Yes
7. The external storage device can now be unplugged
iPad:
While there is currently not a way to safely eject an external device from an iPad we do recommend checking the following prior to disconnecting:
1. No data transfers should be ongoing
2. Manually close the Files app
3. The most secure option would be to shut the iPad down in order to ensure that the SSD is no longer receiving power and is fully disconnected.
