Troubleshooting SSD Disconnects on the Stand & Hub for Mac Mini
If your SSD is disconnecting, not mounting, or not appearing in Finder, follow the steps below in order.
Known Issue: macOS Tahoe 26.x Incompatibility
Symptom: Your drive appears in System Information but does not mount and is not accessible in Finder or Disk Utility.
This is a known incompatibility with macOS Tahoe 26.x. Check this article for the latest status and workarounds.
Step 1: Verify Drive Installation
M.2 SATA SSD
- Confirm the M.2 SATA drive is correctly inserted into the M.2 slot.
- Seat the drive at approximately 30 degrees and press it down flat before tightening the retention screw.
- Important: SATA drives are not compatible with NVMe-only enclosures, and vice versa. Check your enclosure model's spec sheet to confirm interface support.
M.2 NVMe SSD
- Confirm the NVMe drive is fully inserted into the M.2 (PCIe/NVMe) slot.
- NVMe drives run warmer than SATA. Apply the included thermal pad to the top of the drive before closing the enclosure.
- Seat the drive at the correct angle and firmly press it flat before securing the retention screw.
Refer to the Quick Guide and Instructional Manual for detailed installation steps.
Step 2: Adjust Energy Saver Settings
- Open System Settings on your Mac.
- Navigate to Energy (or Battery > Options on laptops).
- Disable Put hard disks to sleep when possible.
This prevents macOS from powering down the SSD enclosure during idle periods, which can cause the drive to disconnect and require a restart to remount.
Step 3: Format the Drive
If the drive is brand new or was previously formatted for a different OS:
- Open Disk Utility (Spotlight search: "Disk Utility").
- Select the drive in the sidebar (if it does not appear, click View > Show All Devices).
- Click Erase.
- Choose APFS format for macOS use, or ExFAT for cross-platform compatibility.
- Click Erase to confirm.
Step 4: Reset USB Bus
If the drive disconnects intermittently:
- Disconnect the Mac Mini from the Stand & Hub.
- Shut down the Mac Mini completely.
- Wait 30 seconds, then reconnect the hub and power on.
On Apple Silicon Macs, a full shutdown and 30-second wait replaces the older Shut down your Mac completely. Wait 30 seconds, then press the power button to turn it back on. (On Intel Macs, you can also try an hardware controller reset: shut down, hold Shift+Control+Option+Power for 10 seconds, then release and power on.) process used on Intel Macs.
