Do I need to download DisplayLink software for this to work?
Yes, for full functionality and to utilize the HDMI ports on the dock, we recommend following the steps provided in the link below, where you will also find the file to download the software: https://www.synaptics.com/products/displaylink-graphics#downloads
macOS: Screen Recording Permission
macOS requires the user to permit "Screen Recording" for DisplayLink driver to work properly. Approving it enables the DisplayLink to access the pixels it needs to render a mirrored or extended screen and send the pixels over USB from your computer to the DisplayLink display. DisplayLink Manager does not send any data or pixels back to DisplayLink/Synaptics.
User is notified about a need for Screen Recording permission in three places.
- By macOS dialog box on first DisplayLink device plug-in
- By DisplayLink driver on each device plug-in:
- By DisplayLink Manager app warning in macOS status bar:
To approve the permission, please follow these steps:
- Open System Settings;
- Go to Privacy & Security > Screen Recording;
- From Screen Recording tab toggle DisplayLink Manager;
- Authenticate the changes by using your login details;
- Click Quit & Reopen.
Once permissions are granted a new icon will show up in the macOS status bar:
macOS Sonoma introduces a new screen recording control, called screen sharing picker to help manage all the screen recording sessions.
See the following article for all the information about the new screen sharing picker: macOS Sonoma 14: Screen Sharing Picker and Stop Sharing Button (DisplayLink KB article no longer available).

Why can't I hear Audio on my Headphones when connected to the 3.5mm Audio Port of this Hub, dock or adapter?
You will need to head to System Settings > Sound > Output
Then plug your 3.5mm headphones (or speakers) into the 3.5mm port of the dock, hub or adapter and select "USB PnP Audio Device or General USB Audio Device". Please use the following images for reference:
The Aux port will support most 3.5mm Headphones, speakers or microphones.
Is the efficiency of the ports on the docking station lowered the more ports that are in use?
If the Thunderbolt ports are occupied, the bandwidth can be affected depending on the devices utilizing them.
Can I use one HDMI port and one Thunderbolt port for displays without using DisplayLink?
For the Thunderbolt 4 Docking Station with DisplayLink, the DisplayLink software must be installed before using any of the HDMI ports.
What are the operating temperatures of this Dock?
The standard operating temperature of the Thunderbolt 4 docking station (with DisplayLink) ranges from 86-131F / 30-55C.
Surface temperatures may feel hot to the touch due to the large surface area.
Note that this will not affect functionality or damage any hardware (62368-1 compliant).
Why is the HDMI port only 2.0 and not 2.1?
Due to the Thunderbolt 4 Dock having DisplayLink software, the max resolution is limited to 4K (HDMI 2.0).
Does the dock include a Thunderbolt 4 cable?
Yes, the Thunderbolt 4 Multi-Display Dock includes a Thunderbolt 4 cable for connecting your host device to the TB4 Dock's host port.
Will I have issues with multiple external displays on M1/M2 MacBooks with the TB4 Multi-Display Dock?
The Thunderbolt 4 Multi-Display Docking Station will resolve the single-display limitation on Apple M1/M2-based models and should allow users to connect two additional displays via HDMI along with the DisplayLink software, which would be a total of three displays for M1/M2-based chipsets.
Just so you know, the new M3 MacBook Air supports up to two displays at 4K@60Hz when in Clamshell Mode, which will allow a total of four external displays.
Does the hub support the Apple DVD Super Drive?
Unfortunately, the Apple SuperDrive is not compatible with the Thunderbolt 4 Slim Hub. You would need to use one of the following adapters and directly connect it to your computer to use the SuperDrive:

Can I charge my phone on this docking station?
Yes, the Thunderbolt 4 Ports support up to 15W power delivery each.
- Can charge phones, small tablets, peripherals, etc.
- Only 2 ports charge at a time
Is this compatible with the iPhone 15 Pro Max?
The iPhone 15 line of devices will be able to support video output, charging, and data transfer (USB2.0 or USB 3.2; speeds depending on the model). Keep in mind that the DisplayLink software is only available on PC, macOS, and Android, not iOS or iPadOS devices.
Is the TB4 Multi-Display Dock compatible with the Samsung Galaxy Tab or other similar Android tablets or phones?
The Thunderbolt dock may be able to connect to some USB-C devices that support video output, power delivery, and data transfer. Keep in mind that the DisplayLink software is only available on PC, macOS, and Android, not iOS or iPadOS devices.
Can I connect up to 5 displays to the dock if my computer supports it?
The Thunderbolt 4 Multidisplay Docking Station will support only up to four (4) connected external displays:
- Up to 2 via USB-C Thunderbolt (USB-C-to-USB-C, -HDMI, -DisplayPort, etc.)
- Up to 2 via HDMI, and with the DisplayLink Software/Driver installed and running on the host device
Will I be able to get multiple displays on the M3 MacBook Air?
There are two options to achieve multiple displays on the 2024 M3 MacBook Air:
- 1) Using the DisplayLink Manager software, connect two 4K-60Hz displays to the two HDMI ports, and a third display up to 6K-60Hz via USB-C Thunderbolt 4 port, all on the docking station.
- 2) With power delivery, a mouse and keyboard connected directly or wirelessly, and up to two displays connected to the dock via USB-C Thunderbolt 4, and the laptop display closed (Clamshell Mode).
What kind of speeds can I expect from the TB4 Multi-Display Docking Station?
You can expect to receive approximately:
- 40 Gbps via the Thunderbolt 4 port
- 10 Gbps via the USB-A Gen 2 ports
- UHS-II Speeds (312MB/s) via the SD Card Reader
Check out the estimated Speed Chart below!
