What Are F13, F14, and F15?
The F13, F14, and F15 keys on the Satechi Extended Keypad are programmable function keys. Unlike F1 through F12, which have preset functions in macOS (brightness, volume, etc.), F13 through F15 are blank by default and can be assigned to any action or shortcut you choose.
How to Assign Custom Actions on macOS (Ventura, Sonoma, Sequoia)
1. Open System Settings.
2. Click Keyboard in the sidebar.
3. Click Keyboard Shortcuts.
4. Select a category on the left (for example, "Mission Control," "Screenshots," or "App Shortcuts").
5. Find the action you want to assign, double-click the current shortcut, and press F13, F14, or F15 on your keypad.
6. The key is now mapped to that action.
On older macOS (Monterey and earlier)
1. Open System Settings > Keyboard > Shortcuts.
2. Follow the same process: select a category, double-click a shortcut, and press F13/F14/F15.
Popular Uses for F13, F14, and F15
Here are some common assignments people use:
F13: Lock screen (set via Keyboard Shortcuts > App Shortcuts, assign to "Lock Screen")
F14: Screenshot (replace the default Command+Shift+4 with a single key press)
F15: Open a specific app (use Automator or Shortcuts to create a workflow, then assign it to F15)
You can also use third-party apps like Karabiner-Elements or BetterTouchTool to map F13 through F15 to virtually any action, including launching apps, controlling music playback, or triggering complex macros.
Do F13-F15 Work on Windows?
Windows does not natively assign functions to F13 through F15, but it does recognize the key inputs. You can use software like AutoHotkey or Microsoft PowerToys (Keyboard Manager) to remap them to any action on Windows.
