Will the new M4 Mac Mini Stand support SSDs with Heatsinks and double-sided drives
Please be informed that, due to the dimensions and form factor of the Stand&Hub, solid-state drives (SSDs) equipped with heatsinks and double-sided drives are not compatible with this enclosure.
Why am I not getting the advertised speeds of my NVMe on my M4 Mac mini Stand & Hub?
The speed ratings shown for NVMe SSDs are usually based on internal testing using direct connections inside a computer (like an M.2 slot). When you use the SSD in an external enclosure, especially one using USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps), you’ll likely see lower speeds, and that’s expected. This is because external enclosures use a different connection type that has its speed limits.
To make sure you’re getting the best results:
- Ensure your NVMe drive is properly formatted (APFS or ExFAT).
- Plug the enclosure into a USB-C port on your computer that supports 10Gbps speeds or more (look for USB 3.2 Gen 2 or a Thunderbolt/USB4 port).
You can also try:
- Testing with a different SSD.
- Reformatting the drive to a different supported format.
- Connecting the enclosure to another computer with a USB 3.2 Gen 2 or Thunderbolt port.
Finally, please make sure your system is up to date. We also recommend removing other USB-C devices and restarting your computer to refresh connections.
What M.2 SSD drives does the new M4 Mac Mini Stand & Hub with NVMe Enclosure support?
The M4 Mac Mini Stand & Hub with NVMe SSD Enclosure supports various NVMe M.2 SSD sizes, including M.2 2230, 2242, 2260, and 2280. This versatility enables users to select drives that align with their storage and speed needs, offering transfer speeds of up to 10 Gbps through USB-C Gen 2 technology.
Only supports NVMe M.2 PCIe Solid State Drives (SSDs). SSDs equipped with heatsinks and double-sided drives are NOT compatible with this enclosure.
Which SSDs have been tested with the hub's enclosure?
- The following SSDs have been tested:
- Samsung 980 Pro
- Samsung 990 Pro
- WD_Black SN850X
- WD_Black SN770
- WD PC SN740
- Crucial P3
- Crucial P3 Plus
- Nextorage Series
- Teamgroup T-Force Z5
Which 2230 size SSDs have been tested with the hub?
- The following 2230 size SSDs have been tested:
- MP600 Mini (2230)
- WD-Black SN770M (2230)
- Sabrent Rocket
Can I use other SSDs not listed here?
- Yes, as long as the SSD is an NVMe M.2 SSD(Does not support M.2 SATA), fits within one of the supported sizes (2230, 2242, 2260, 2280), and has a maximum capacity of 4TB, it should work with the hub's enclosure.
What speeds does the enclosure support?
The built-in NVMe enclosure for the Mac mini M4 Stand & Hub supports up to 10Gbps transfer speeds. Although the port connection from the Mac mini is Thunderbolt 4 (or Thunderbolt 5 for M4 Pro Mac minis), the enclosure within the hub only supports USB 3.2 (10Gbps) transfer speeds.
Is this compatible with the M1 or M2 Mac mini?
No, this version of the Mac Mini Stand & Hub with SSD NVMe Enclosure is specifically designed for the M4 Mac mini.
Will the hub cause thermal issues when connected to my Mac?
The stand is equipped with a raised design to provide a space where the air and heat can escape. The housing is also perforated to not restrict airflow, allowing for unobstructed ventilation, and for proper heat distribution keeping the hub and your Mac within standard operating temperatures.
Will all the ports work simultaneously? Including the SD card slot?
Yes, but note that the Stand&Hub for M4 Mac Mini is a bus power hub and has a shared wattage and data bandwidth.
While all ports work simultaneously, we advise using 1 drive at a time for optimum performance.
Supported Peripherals:
- External Hard Drives (1 drive at a time)
- Flash Drives
- USB Mice/Keyboards
- Headphones
- Microphones
- Webcams
Why does my external storage drive keep ejecting unexpectedly when connected to your hub or enclosure?
- Use it for storage or Time Machine backups, not as a bootable OS if the enclosure doesn’t support >10Gbps.
- Avoid heavy/continuous read-write tasks.
- Ensure the USB-C port provides sufficient power, especially with bus-powered hubs/enclosures.
