Your AirPods case must be a wireless charging case (Qi). To check, look at the status light: a wireless charging case has the LED on the front outside of the case, and it glows orange while charging and green when full. A standard case has the LED inside, visible only when the lid is open, and must be charged with a cable. Also remove any cover on the case that could block contact with the charging coil.
