If a device is not being detected through the Type-C Aluminum Stand & Hub for Mac Mini (models ST-ABHFM and ST-ABHFS), the cause is usually the connection to your Mac Mini or using a port that does not supply enough power for that device. Work through the steps below.
Steps to fix a device not detected on the Type-C Aluminum Stand & Hub for Mac Mini
- Check the connection and the LED. Make sure the stand's built-in USB-C cable is plugged into one of the Thunderbolt 3 ports on the back of your Mac Mini. The LED lights up when the connection is good. If it is off, reseat the connector or try a different Thunderbolt 3 port.
- Confirm your Mac Mini is supported. The stand works with the Mac Mini from 2018 and later. It draws power from the Mac Mini through the Thunderbolt 3 port and does not use a separate power supply.
- Use the right port for the device. The hub's USB-C port is low-power and is meant for small, low-power items such as an iPhone or a small USB-C thumb drive. For an external hard drive, such as a Samsung T7, plug it into one of the three USB 3.0 (USB-A) ports instead, which supply more power.
- Connect only one external hard drive at a time. The hub's USB power is limited, so connecting more than one powered drive at once can stop them from being read.
- Know the USB-C port's limits. That port handles data only, at up to 5 Gbps. It does not carry video and does not charge devices, so a blank monitor or a device that will not charge through it is expected.
- Test the device directly. Plug the drive or device straight into the Mac Mini to confirm it works, then reconnect it through the correct port on the hub.
