This User Manual covers setup, features, compatibility, and specifications for the Satechi USB-C NVMe and SATA SSD Enclosure (ST-UCNSEM).

Product Overview

The USB-C NVMe and SATA SSD Enclosure turns a bare M.2 drive into a portable USB-C drive, so you can expand your storage, back up files, recover data from an old drive, or move large files at up to 10 Gbps. It accepts both M.2 PCIe NVMe and M.2 SATA SSDs and installs without tools. The SSD is sold separately.

Setup

The USB-C NVMe and SATA SSD Enclosure is plug and play, no drivers or software required. The SSD is sold separately, so install a drive before you use the enclosure for the first time.

1. Unlock the enclosure: Slide and push the switch to unlock the internal enclosure.
2. Attach the thermal pad: Remove the plastic from an included thermal pad, then attach the pad behind the SSD before installing it. This keeps the enclosure cooler. Make sure the thermal pad is not blocking the pins.

3. Move the silicone pin: Remove the silicone pin and position it in the notch on the opposite side of the pins.
4. Insert the SSD: Insert the SSD at an angle and face up with the pins aligned, then press down on the silicone pin to secure it in place.
5. Close the enclosure: Align the arrows and push the internal enclosure into the housing. You should hear a click once it locks into place.

Note: If you are installing a new SSD, format the drive for the operating system you will be using it with.

Connecting to a Host Device

1. Plug the included USB-C cable into the USB-C port on the enclosure.
2. Connect the other end of the cable to a USB-C port on your host device.

Important Limitations

If installing a new SSD, please format the drive to support the operating system you will be using it with. For example, macOS (APFS or macOS Journaled), Windows (NTFS), or both systems (exFAT).

Not compatible with SSDs with pre-installed heat sinks. A drive with a heat sink already fitted will not fit inside the enclosure.

Unplug the adapter when installing and removing the SSD. Disconnect the USB-C cable from your host device before you open the enclosure.

Attach the thermal pad to the SSD before installing to keep the enclosure cooler. Make sure the pad is not blocking the pins.

Speeds will vary based on the SSD in use. NVMe drives run at up to 10 Gbps and SATA drives run at up to 6 Gbps. The drive itself, not the enclosure, sets the ceiling.

The SSD is not included. You supply your own M.2 PCIe NVMe or M.2 SATA drive.
