This User Manual covers setup, features, compatibility, and specifications for the Satechi DotDisk™ 80Gbps SSD Enclosure (ST-EDD80C / ST-EDD80S).
What's In The Box
DotDisk™ 80Gbps SSD Enclosure, Thunderbolt 5 cable, screwdriver, thermal pad, 2x replacement screws, User Manual. (SSD not included.)
Product Overview
This enclosure turns a bare M.2 NVMe SSD into fast portable storage: install a 2280-size drive up to 8TB, connect with the included Thunderbolt 5 cable, and transfer at up to 80Gbps over USB4 V2, the same bandwidth as Thunderbolt 5. A built-in fan and vented aluminum body keep the drive cool during long transfers, and everything needed for installation, the screwdriver, thermal pad, and spare screws, is in the box. It is plug and play on macOS, Windows, and Linux with no drivers or firmware updates.
Setup
The enclosure is plug and play: no drivers required on macOS, Windows, or Linux.
- Install your SSD: Fit a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD into the enclosure (see SSD Installation below).
- Connect to your host device: Use the included Thunderbolt 5 cable to connect the enclosure to a Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, or USB4 port.
- Format your SSD: A new SSD must be formatted before it shows as usable storage: Disk Utility on Mac, Disk Management on Windows.
SSD Installation
1. Use the included screwdriver to unscrew and remove the top cover.
2. Remove the SSD screw inside.
3. Insert your M.2 NVMe SSD into the slot at about a 30° angle.
4. Press the SSD down and secure it with the included screw.
5. Peel and apply the included thermal pad directly onto the SSD.
6. Place the top cover back onto the enclosure and secure it by tightening the screw you removed in step 1.
Note: SSD is not included. Compatible only with 2280 M.2 NVMe SSDs up to 8TB. Not compatible with SATA SSDs, sizes 2230/2242/2260, or SSDs with pre-installed heatsinks.
Functions
Parts labeled diagram of the DotDisk™ 80Gbps SSD Enclosure with 8 labeled components, including the included accessories.
1. Top Cover Screw: Secures the vented top cover. Unscrew it with the included screwdriver to open the enclosure and reach the SSD slot.
2. LED Indicator: The small light next to the port. Lights up white when connected to the host device and flashes during activity.
3. USB4 V2 Port (80Gbps): Connects to your computer with the included Thunderbolt 5 cable. Carries data at up to 80Gbps; reaching full speed requires a Thunderbolt 5 or USB4 V2 (80Gbps) host port and cable.
4. 2× Replacement Screws: Spare screws for the SSD mount.
5. Thermal Pad: Peel off its plastic film and apply it directly onto the installed SSD to conduct heat into the enclosure body.
6. Screwdriver: Included driver that fits the top cover screw and SSD screw.
7. M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure (2280 sizes) (up to 8TB max): The SSD slot. Takes 2280-size M.2 NVMe drives up to 8TB only; SATA drives, 2230/2242/2260 sizes, and drives with pre-installed heatsinks do not fit.
8. SSD Screw: Holds the installed SSD flat in the slot.
Features
- Data transfer up to 80Gbps over USB4 V2, the same maximum bandwidth as Thunderbolt 5.

Important Limitations
Eject before unplugging: Properly eject the SSD prior to disconnecting it from the host device.
Keep vents clear: Please do not cover the ventilation holes during use.
Thermal pad film: Ensure the plastic film is removed from the thermal pad before applying.
Unplug before swapping drives: Ensure the enclosure is unplugged from the host when changing SSDs.
Host compatibility: Downwards compatible with Thunderbolt 4, USB4, and USB-C devices. Speeds may vary depending on host device capabilities.
Cable matters: Use the included Thunderbolt 5 cable for best performance. If a longer cable is needed, ensure the cable can support 80Gbps speeds.
SSD compatibility: Only 2280-size M.2 NVMe SSDs up to 8TB. SATA SSDs, 2230/2242/2260 sizes, and SSDs with pre-installed heatsinks are not supported.
