When to Use This Guide
If your Satechi USB-C hub or adapter is experiencing issues with HDMI display output, Ethernet connectivity, USB device detection, or card reader functionality, resetting your Mac's hardware controller often resolves the problem. This resets the system components that manage USB-C port behavior.
Before starting, disconnect the hub or adapter from your Mac.
Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M2, M3, M4 and later)
Apple Silicon Macs do not have a traditional hardware controller (System Management Controller). Instead, a full shutdown and restart resets the equivalent functions.
1. Click the Apple menu and select Shut Down.
2. After the Mac fully powers off, wait 30 seconds.
3. Press the power button to turn the Mac back on.
4. Once macOS loads, reconnect your Satechi hub or adapter and test.
If that does not resolve the issue, try this extended reset:
1. Shut down the Mac completely.
2. Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds, then release.
3. Wait a few seconds, then press the power button normally to start up.
4. Reconnect your hub or adapter.
Intel Macs with T2 Chip (2018 and later Intel models)
1. Click the Apple menu and select Shut Down.
2. After the Mac shuts down, press and hold the power button for 10 seconds, then release.
3. Wait a few seconds, then press the power button to turn on your Mac.
If that does not work:
1. Shut down the Mac.
2. Press and hold the right Shift key + left Option key + left Control key for 7 seconds.
3. While still holding those keys, also press and hold the power button for another 7 seconds.
4. Release all keys and the power button, wait a few seconds, then power on.
5. Reconnect your Satechi adapter.
Older Intel Macs (without T2 Chip)
1. Shut down the Mac.
2. Press and hold Shift + Control + Option on the left side of the keyboard, then press the power button at the same time.
3. Hold all four keys for 10 seconds, then release.
4. Press the power button to turn on the Mac.
5. Reconnect your adapter.
How to Check Which Mac You Have
Click the Apple menu > About This Mac. If the chip line says "Apple M1," "Apple M2," "Apple M3," or "Apple M4," you have an Apple Silicon Mac. If it says "Intel," check the model year to determine if it has a T2 chip (most 2018+ Intel Macs do).
Still Having Issues?
If the reset did not fix the problem, try these additional steps:
1. Test the hub with a different USB-C cable (if applicable).
2. Test on a different Mac or computer to rule out a hardware defect.
3. Check System Settings > General > Software Update to make sure macOS is up to date.
4. Contact our Technical Support team with your Mac model, macOS version, and a description of the issue.
