M3 (base model): supports 2 external monitors only in clamshell mode (lid closed).
M4 and M5 (base models): support up to 2 external monitors at 6K 60Hz with the laptop open, no clamshell mode required. The built-in display can be used as an additional screen.
Pro / Max / Ultra (any generation):
Support at least 2 external monitors up to 6K at 60Hz.
M5 Pro and M5 Max models support up to 3 external monitors (triple-display setup) in addition to the built-in display, depending on configuration.
Windows:
3 external monitors at 8K 60Hz or 4K 144Hz; supports 8K 120Hz when using 1 external monitor, and 8K120Hz when using 2 external monitors.
** Both the laptop GPU and external monitors must support DSC 3:1 compression to achieve maximum resolution.
