If the solid state drive (SSD) you installed in the Satechi Mac Mini M4 Stand & Hub with SSD Enclosure (ST-GNMMES) is not showing up on your Mac, the cause is usually a drive compatibility mismatch, a loose connection, or a drive that has not been formatted yet. Work through the steps below in order.
How to Fix an SSD That Is Not Detected
- Check the drive type. The enclosure only supports M.2 Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) SSDs in 2230, 2242, 2260, or 2280 sizes. SATA M.2 drives, double-sided drives, and drives with pre-installed heatsinks are not compatible.
- Power off your Mac Mini and disconnect the hub.
- Remove the enclosure cover on the bottom of the stand, then remove and reinsert the SSD. Insert the SSD at a slight angle, make sure the SSD is fully seated in the slot, and secure the SSD with the included screw.
- Reattach the enclosure cover, reconnect the hub to your Mac Mini, and power the Mac Mini back on.
- Open Disk Utility, choose View, then choose Show All Devices, and check whether the drive appears.
- If the drive appears but does not mount, format the drive. Brand new SSDs must be formatted before first use. In Disk Utility, erase the drive using Apple File System (APFS) or exFAT.
- Disconnect other high-powered devices from the hub. Connecting more than one high-powered peripheral or external storage device while an SSD is installed can cause the SSD to unmount.
- Update macOS. Early versions of macOS Tahoe 26 have a known issue that can prevent external drives from mounting, so install the latest macOS update available for your Mac.
